Donald Cole, a lung cancer survivor, is an avid supporter for living a tobacco-free lifestyle. Originally from New York, he retired after 31 years of military service. He then served in law enforcement in Tallahassee, Georgia. After moving to North Carolina, Cole became involved with SAVE (Survivors and Victims of Tobacco Empowerment). As a grantee of the NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund (HWTF), SAVE sends Cole to tell his survivor story to youth in schools throughout North Carolina. His story offers students a glimpse of “Tobacco Reality Unfiltered,” the ad campaign sponsored by the HWTF Commission Grant for the statewide Teen Initiative Tobacco Prevention/Cessation Program. Cole’s cancer has now been in remission for 11 years. He enjoys talking to youth about the downside of using tobacco and hopes that his story and the information he provides in his presentations will help students stay tobacco-free.
